An Environmental Assessment (EA) is the first step to figuring out what environmental permits and actions are needed prior to any land clearing or development. An EA report includes habitat assessment (wetlands or native upland habitat), desktop soil review, review of vegetative species composition, presence of federally or state listed wildlife species, and a review of applicable local, state, and federal land development regulations.
Certain wildlife species are protected under federal and/or state laws such as the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), the Marine Turtle Protection Act, and the Florida Black Bear Conservation Rule. Protected species require certain procedures to be followed prior to any land clearing or development occurring. Activities include presence or absence surveys, permits, monitoring or protection plans, and relocation/removal. Most local government agencies require the assessment and/or survey of a property for protected wildlife species as a part of the land clearing/development approval process. We are permitted under the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to conduct gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) relocation work.
For many land clearing/development projects, tree protection is required as part of the local government agency permitting process. Each county or city will have their own criteria pertaining to tree protection and mitigation. We can assist in the process by conducting tree surveys (locating and marking protected trees) and assisting in the development of a tree mitigation/protection plan.
Our staff has 5+ years of experience delineating wetlands in Southeast Florida. The process involves a desktop review of the site, a site visit(s) to locate and mark the extent of the wetland(s) on site, mapping, and a report detailing the permitting process involved with the development of the site. We can also conduct state jurisdictional determinations and assist in the regulatory permitting process.
